Job Description

Position:  Athletic Trainer 

Type: Full-Time 

Location: USSS Rowley Training Center (RTC), Laurel, MD; with support to Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) Georgia and FLETC Artesia 

Travel: 10%

Position Summary : The Athletic Trainer provides preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care programs in support of USSS personnel and trainees. This role delivers direct care and counseling on injury prevention, rehabilitation, training, diet, and overall wellness while coordinating with medical and training staff to ensure rapid and safe return to duty. The Athletic Trainer will also participate in curriculum development for wellness and resiliency initiatives. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Develop and implement preventative, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care programs for USSS members
  • Provide counseling to personnel on injury prevention, rehabilitation, training, diet, and rest
  • Apply protective and therapeutic bandaging, wrapping, and padding techniques
  • Evaluate injuries and determine appropriate referral to emergency or allied healthcare services
  • Collaborate with Strength & Conditioning Specialists and the Program Manager to integrate injury prevention with physical training
  • Maintain detailed medical and rehabilitation records as part of the program's administrative reporting
  • Participate in agency wellness and resiliency initiatives and provide professional input on curriculum development
  • Conduct physical and rehabilitative training both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions 
  • Advises and provides counsel to USSS personnel on matters related to injury prevention, care, conditioning, rehabilitation, training, diet, rest, and related matters
  • Measures and applies protective and therapeutic bandaging, wrapping, strapping, padding, and other protective devices to prevent injury to USSS trainees and incumbent employees
  • Refers USSS personnel to Emergency Services, or allied health care specialists as appropriate 

Required Skills and Abilities:  

  • U.S. citizenship/residency required 
  • Must have a favorable Public Trust background investigation 
  • Undergo a Suitability Assessment as determined by the US Secret Service's Security Management Division's Contractor Support Branch (SMD-CSB) prior to performing any work
  • Master's degree in Athletic Training required 
  • Possess a minimum of 10 years of experience working as a Certified Athletic Trainer
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years classroom teaching experience which can be concurrent with athletic training experience
  • Certified Athletic Training (ATC) certification in the State of Maryland and the State of Virginia 
  • Maintain professional certifications annually at own expense 
  • Assist in the development of preventative, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care programs for USSS members
  • This position involves outdoor as well as indoor activities and the applicant must be capable of working outdoors for extended periods in all weather
  • Strong written, verbal, and briefing communication skills 

Physical Demands and Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and write. The employee frequently is required to use foot/ankle motions, hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
